Along with residing as Kwan Jang (Head Dean) and President of the United States Chung Do Kwan Association, Sr. Grandmaster Brenda Sell also owns the Sell Team Academy of Taekwondo in Lakeland, Florida. She has a dedicated, loyal staff that are devoted to providing the highest quality instruction. She is also very active in her church and is dedicated to following God’s will for her life; further, she is a founding member of the Sell Team Ministry–an evangelistic ministry that uses the art of Taekwondo to bring an audience and share a message of hope and forgiveness . Since its inception in the 1980s, she and the late Sr. Grandmaster Edward B. Sell have continually loved sharing their faith in Jesus Christ. Black belts from around the nation often join them to put on a spectacular Taekwondo demonstration that captures the attention of any audience. They have been invited to speak at U.S. military bases throughout the world, including West Point, as well as many prisons and churches, which continues to be close to their hearts.
Of all of the titles and honors she has received in her life, none compare to that of “Nana,” the title her granddaughter and grandson have lovingly given her. In March of 2003, her granddaughter, Madison, sat in Sr. Grandmaster Edward B. Sell’s (otherwise known as “Papa”) lap and witnessed her grandmother test for the World Taekwondo Chung Do Kwan 8th Dan. Her successful performance allowed her to advance to Kukkiwon 8th Dan just one year later. Sr. Grandmaster Brenda Sell is a pioneer for women, not only in Taekwondo but in ministry as well. Nine years later, she successfully tested for the 9th Degree Chung Do Kwan and is now preparing to test for her Kukkiwon 9th Degree in 2015.
As one can imagine, Taekwondo has been a major part of Sr. Grandmaster Brenda Sell’s family life. Her family has remained actively involved in Taekwondo: her husband, the late Sr. Grandmaster Edward B. Sell, is 10th Dan Kukkiwon, and the highest ranked non-Korean in the world. Her oldest son, Master Ron Sell, 7th Dan, operates his own martial arts software company, while her youngest son, Master Robby Sell, 6th Dan, works for the national association (USCDKA), and her granddaughter Madison is now a red belt! Her brother, Grandmaster Mark Begley, is an 8th Dan and her mother and sister have worked for her in the USCDKA office for decades. The family abides by the saying, “A family that prays together stays together, and a family that kicks together, sticks together.” The Sell family has led the way in the evolution of Taekwondo from a man’s sport to one that embraces all peoples. The Sells continue to break barriers and raise the standards in Taekwondo throughout the world. The USCDKA is currently offering new memberships to qualified school owners seeking credentials. As Grandmasters, the Sells have always been dedicated to the success and personal goals of each school owner and set aside time throughout each year for seminars and special events nationwide.
